About Jericoacoara (Jeri)
Jijoca de Jericoacoara is a city in the state of Ceará, Brazil, some 300 km west of Fortaleza. Jeri, as it is affectionately known, is a place where pavement does not exist and there is sand under every step. It is the kind of idyllic place where many travelers end up deciding to stay for longer than they had originally planned.
The city is home of the Jericoacoara beach which has been considered by the Washington Post one of the 10 most beautiful beaches in the world.
There are no permanent roads in or out of Jericoacoara. It can be accessed only by dune buggy or truck, -most visitors arriving via Jijoca. Pick up trucks do this 40 min bumpy run every hour or so. In Fortaleza dozens of agencies offer package deals, but you mostly get by cheaper on your own, taking a Redenção bus, twice daily, and shopping around for a bed.
Jericoacoara is the best spot in Brazil for windsurfers and kitesurfers, where the wind season starts in August and goes until December, the water temperature is very good, and winds average 25 knots almost every day. There is also windsurf in the sea (Jericoacoara) waves,or in the Paradise Lake (slalon).
The small village of Jericoacoara consists of five sandy streets lined with attractive bars, restaurants and several charming pousadas. In the early morning and at the end of the afternoon, the streets of Jeri are busy. It's time of day that inhabitants and visitors take advantage of the sun's weaker rays to go shopping or walk around. The rest of the day it's better for most to find some shady tree or a veranda. In the nighttime forro music invades the streets of Jeri. In the first hours of the morning, fishermen prepare to go out to sea and eventually run into the party goers who were at the forro. Around 2200 people living in Jeri. The pace of living is slow and patiente and one is never too busy for a conversation with the neighbour. When Jericoacoara obtained electricity only a few short years ago, everyone thought it was on its way out. Modern civilization had arrived to destroy the unspoiled feeling of the place. Surprisingly, Jeri remains a tropical paradise.
